Interesting article by David Pescovitz in The Feature, called “State of the Artists” about how research and art are crossbreeding. He covers some of my work (SimpleTEXT and Wifi-Hog) and Usman Haque’s Sky Ear project in the article. The debate rests on the question of whether technologically minded artists make good researchers since their aesthetic is usually very opposite from traditional research. I think the hybrid can exist in fact, I’m more comfortable straddling the line between the two in most of my own practice. I often get comments on my work from traditional researchers who want to see the work go through a formalized study process, in which I usually answer: “Um, it wouldn’t be the same work or half as interesting if I did this”. Would like to hear more perspectives on this question though, anyone game?
