Aparna Rao’s The Uncle Phone is a silly augmented object that consists of an elongated telephone designed specifically for her lazy uncle. In her words: “This project is inspired by my uncle’s peculiar habit of asking people to do things for him that he can very well do himself, such as dialing the number on a landline telephone (while he only listens). This two meter long phone was made to express the unique way that my uncle uses a regular telephone; it requires two people to operate- one to dial and another to speak.” I’m sure we all have relatives like this, but the object is a nice reminder of how design could actually change someone’s day to day habits (or not!).
