Memorials sketches for the World Trade Center site are online. It’s hard to say if I like or dislike them. Memorials are tricky because on one hand they should symbolize the plight or courage of the people or events they represent, but on the other hand they have to be timeless so that people from many generations can relate to them. Thus they have to walk the line of being highly personal as well as cater to a wide audience. What do I think of these designs? They tend to emphasize the victims more than the meaning of the event. This kind of victim mourning seems to be popular now as the US seems like “wound recovery central” and is hated on by every nation (including itself) on the planet. We shall see what happens.
