NYC-based designer, Marc Lin (who I first met in 2001 at International Browserday at Cooper Union), has been up to interesting video tracking + sound experiments. Motion + Melody is a video capture app that notices changes in frames and assigns musical tones to each distinct change. The best part is when he points the camera at city traffic as can be seen in the video link (above). Reminds me a bit of what Sonic City is trying to do with wearable sensors. The rest of Marc’s portfolio is located at www.macaque.net . This particular work reminds me of two projects that deal with time-lapsed video – namely Last Clock and Australian artist Daniel Crook’s “Time Slice”. Although Lin is making sound from the video, it’s hard to know if it would be considered music or just arty “blips”? Either way it’s done really well.
