San Fran’s ParkScan program outfits ordinary citizens with wireless PDAs, online maps of local parks, and surveys for them to report on health and safety conditions in the parks. Anyone online can look over the results of the surveys which includes photos and descriptions of neighborhood parks. This one shows some graffiti found in a playground and is marked “unsatisfactory” by its surveyor. Very cool idea and reminds me of ComNet here in NYC that allows citizens to take images with PDAs of local infrastrucuture problems and send them to city officials. Its good to finally see this technology used for the public good by the public themselves.
