This inflatable USB drive called the “Flashbag” grows in size (using micro air pumps) as more data is loaded into it and keeps its shape even when unplugged. The idea is that you can have an instant “visual” sense of how much space you have left on your external drive. I came up with a similar project a few years ago called the “Data Heavy Laptop” – a laptop that would get heavier depending on how much data was stored on its internal disk. My solution was to use an injection system with fast-drying concrete that would fill up a chamber in the laptop as data was generated and saved on the system. Mine was messier than this and a lot more painful – but I think it gets the point across a bit stronger. It made you think carefully about what data you really want to store and what’s not worth storing.. otherwise it could mean you break your back under the weight strain.
